eva International (formerly ev+a) is pleased to announce that the international open call for proposals is now open.

'Everywhere we look and everything we read right now seems to tell us we are at a new juncture. We are at an unprecedented moment of change – whether teetering on the edge of a financial precipice, or witnessing extraordinary new articulations of protest. This year eva International will attempt to tap into this feeling of imminence by understanding how artists define and explain the status quo in relation to global events. What are we on the verge of? How do artists envisage what is to come and what is to be done?'

eva International and Annie Fletcher would like to invite artists from all over the world to propose new or existing works for inclusion in eva International 2012. Proposals can be made in any medium and selected artists will be supported to produce new or show existing works in Limerick City, Ireland from 19 May – 12 August 2012.

Proposals should be made through the online submission process. Artists can make up to 2 proposals and there is a submission fee of €20 for 1 proposal or €30 for 2 proposals. Supporting materials can either be uploaded through the online submission process, sent by post to Limerick City Gallery of Art, or delivered by hand to Limerick City Gallery of Art or Fire Station Artists' Studios, Dublin. Deadline: 31 January 2012.

Annie Fletcher is currently Curator of Exhibitions at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, and tutor at De Appel, Amsterdam. Recent presentations include solo exhibitions or projects with Jo Baer, Jutta Koether, Cerith Wynn Evans, Deimantas Narkevicius, Minerva Cuevas and the long term project, 'Be(com)ing Dutch' with Charles Esche (2006–2009). She was co-founder and co-director of the rolling platform 'If I Can't Dance, I Don't Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution' with Frederique Bergholtz (2005–2010), and Co-Curator of Cork Caucus with Charles Esche and Art / not art (2005). As a writer she has recently contributed to various magazines including 'Afterall' and 'Metropolis M', and is currently on the editorial board of 'A Prior' magazine.

Energy and blood were tangible in Adriana Jebeleanu's paintings, Jebe for us all. She was a fast painter and her big canvases were painted rapidly, leaving a lot of white space around, always with recognizeable figures: a dog, a man walking, a tank. And a splash of blood red paint, almost all the times. The joke was about her being Transilvanian. I couldn't say we were friends, but we shared in the past many an exhibition in Modena, and many a frustration about the Italian art world, about gallerists' behaviour, and the backstabbing scene of Italian individualism.
It's hard for me to accept that she committed suicide. Especially hard to know that I will no longer see fresh new works of hers at the next art fair, her sweet laughter after my compliments, a new development of her work. It's hard to accept that a creative research in progress has been broken in a split second.
The Italian art community is not a community, but episodes like this make its failure more tangible.

I will miss Jebe, and I will miss her art.

Pfyn is a small city in Switzerland.
It used to be a Roman outpost called Ad Fines.

For the year 2011/2012 Pfyn is Cultural Capital of Switzerland.
In this occasion a TIME CAPSULE will be placed under ground.
You are invited to participate in a Mail Art project together with the inhabitants of the city and leave a trace of your idea of Pfyn in 2011 for future finders.

The TIME CAPSULE will be open either in 2111 or in 4011.

Topic of the project: Self-portrait
is a glance of what you reflect, how do do you want to be seen, remembered, the traits that define you from a personal point of view.

• Postcards should be approximately 13 x 18 cms (app. 5 x 7) Send without envelope, with stamp.

• There is no required technique (photograph, painting, collage, mixed media, etc). However postcards should be durable enough to travel by mail, and shouldn't be too heavy or delicate

2000 ANNI DOPO, LE SCUSE PER L'INVASIONE DELLA SVIZZERA

All'artista bolognese Stefano W. Pasquini il compito di rappresentare l'Italia nella Capitale della Cultura Svizzera per il 2011/2012

L'artista bolognese Stefano W. Pasquini, 41 anni, è stato selezionato per rappresentare l'Italia nelle "Democratic Art Weeks" della città svizzera di Pfyn, quest'anno Capitale Culturale della Svizzera.

Durante le "Settimane Democratiche dell'Arte", organizzate dal Museo Transitorisches di Pfyn, Pasquini ha presentato il suo progetto che si concluderà l'anno prossimo con la costruzione di una scultura di grandi dimensioni che verrà piazzata in via definitiva in una nuova rotatoria cittadina. La scultura sarà costruita dal legno proveniente da tre alberi che al momento si ergono alti nel mezzo del centro cittadino, a minacciare una piccola costruzione di legno, una casetta che un tempo era la pesa del paese. Sapendo dell'imminente taglio dei tre pini, che verranno rimpiazzati con alberi meno invasivi, Pasquini ha colto l'occasione per ideare una scultura che i cittadini di Pfyn potranno ricordare per molto tempo. "Prima di tutto", commenta Pasquini, "il mio intervento vuole essere una sorta di annuncio di scuse per l'invasione romana di 2000 anni fa, da cui Pfyn ha preso il nome (Ad Fines), essendo l'ultimo avamposto romano prima del confine con il territorio barbaro."

LA SCULTURA

I tronchi verranno tagliati ed assemblati dal tecnico specializzato Rolf Dähler e dal fabbro Ueli Stump, sotto la supervisione dell'artista, a creare la parola PFYN in una lunghezza di 6,5 metri circa. La scultura si ergerà nella rotonda cittadina guardando verso sud. Sotto la scultura una targa di metallo avviserà il visitatore che per commemorare Pfyn quale Capitale della Cultura Svizzera sotto terra è stata posta una capsula temporale con le memorie dei cittadini nel 2011.

LA TIME CAPSULE

2500 cartoline acquerellabili sono state stampate e presentate ai cittadini di Pfyn in occasione della festa nazionale svizzera. In presenza del sindaco Jacqueline Müller, Pasquini ha presentato il progetto per la scultura e ha chiesto alla popolazione di participare attivamente al progetto, compilando e scrivendo sulla cartolina la loro idea di quello che per loro Pfyn rappresenta nel 2011, attraverso parole, versi, disegni, colori eccetera. Le cartoline in quella giornata di festa sono state prese d'assalto dai bambini del paese, che poi le hanno riposte nella cassetta elettorale del Comune, in attesa di essere poi inserite in un contenitore metallico e resistente all'acqua ed al tempo, la Time Capsule appunto, che conterrà tutte le cartoline dei cittadini, e delle persone che hanno lasciato Pfyn negli anni. Inoltre un progetto di Mail Art verrà allestito per permettere ad artisti di tutto il mondo di raccontare Pfyn in modo creativo e divertente. Al momento la popolazione sta decidendo autonomamente se l'apertura della Time Capsule dovrebbe essere programmata per il 2111 oppure per il 4011.

LA CERIMONIA

Durante la cerimonia di inaugurazione della scultura, nell'autunno del 2012, una performance musicale verrà presentata da un residente albanese che annuncerà, nella sua lingua, con la frase "Un grido di dolore per i morti di Pfyn causati dall'Impero Romano", un piccolo brano musicale suonato dal corno inglese di una giovane appartenente alla banda di ottoni di Pfyn, composto appositamente da Pasquini con l'aiuto del suo collaboratore musicale Alessandro Linzitto.

Con questa corta performance, intensa e leggermente surreale, l'artista vuole mettere in discussione alcuni preconcetti storici dell'immigrazione nel mondo occidentale per sottolineare che l'accettazione della diversità è sempre stato un elemento fondamentale per lo sviluppo culturale ed economico di una società.

L'incrocio in cui sorgerà la rotonda e l'intervento scultoreo

L'evento "Democratic Art Weeks", curato da Alex Meszmer e Reto Müller del Museo Transitorisches di Pfyn, vede, oltre all'intervento di Pasquini, quello di altri 10 artisti da tutta Europa: Ana Laura Lopez de la Torres da Londra, Interpixel (Eva Maria Würth e Philippe Sablonier) da Zurigo, Kidswest (Meris Schüpbach) da Berna, Marina Belobrovaja da Zurigo, Matthias Kuhn da Trogen, Uta Weyrich e Eva Paulitsch da Stoccarda, Beat Lippert da Genf, Moritz Ebinger da Egmond aan Zeen e Fatma Hendawy Yehia da Alessandria d'Egitto. Tutti organizzeranno un evento o un'opera che vedrà l'intervento attivo dei cittadini di Pfyn.

We will start this years summer week with an artists talk with Ana Laura Lopez de la Torre from London and Stefano W. Pasquini from Bologna

who will talk about their work, their project in Pfyn and their ideas of democratic art.

This years exhibition is referring to this years title of 'Pfyn - cultural capital of Switzerland 2011-12' that is:

be fit for the cultural capital!

The artists in residence of the democratic art weeks present themselves in short films and talk about what they want to do in Pfyn and we are showing the work in progress

of projects that started already.

Apart from that we will show some freshly digitalized Pfyn films and interviews.

For those of you not staying near Pfyn these days, but in the mood for traveling, we recommend to pass by the swiss reading room of the national library of Estonia in Tallinn -

the cultural capital of Europe 2011. There yo can learn more about 'Pfyn - cultural capital 2011 - 12' and the ongoing projects in an exhibition that opened yesterday.

This is very likely to be a scam, as the email doesn't talk about any specific work, and can target any artist. I seem to recall something about him on the Artists' Space website some years ago. The story would be that you (artist) would show some works, you'd get an appreciation email saying they'd buy one of them for a set price. You would get a check for a higher amount, and with some excuse you'd be asked to send the work and a check, only to find out that the check you got bounced and you're left with no work and money.

	Dutch coup d'état in art and culture Appeal for response! www.dezaaknu.nl www.schadekaart.nl Last week in a memorandum titled "More than Quality," the State Secretary for Culture, acting on behalf of the Dutch government (a minority government of liberals and Christian Democrats, whose hold on power relies on the support of Geert Wilders's anti-Islam Freedom Party (PVV)) announced his new "vision" for the field of culture, which represents nothing less than a violent and sweeping political manoeuvre aimed at the very notion of culture and art, its role in society, and its place within the democratic sphere. With the exception of but a handful of "top international institutions" that will be spared, the entire field of internationally focused and future-oriented artistic experimentation, innovation, education, and development, which has distinguished the Netherlands and given it a leading international position in the field for many decades, is to be demolished practically overnight. Instead of preserving the values of experimentation, risk, and vision, the memorandum leaves us with rhetoric about "strengthening the responsibility and resilience of citizens" and letting "the market" take its "natural" course. To be clear: Dutch professionals in the field of art and culture are aware of the fact that some cuts in funding are necessary given today's economic situation and that a recalibration of support may be called for. Furthermore the cuts in arts funding might seem of lesser importance in light of what is happening, with the same brutality, in the fields of healthcare, social reform, education, the media and scientific research, among others. However it is in solidarity with all these realms that we raise our voices in disagreement about the sweeping, overreaching, and devastating broad cuts proposed. Speaking from the position of our field, we find it essential to point out that what we are facing is in fact an end of an internationally valued cultural climate, which we dare say is unparalleled anywhere in the world. In and outside of the Netherlands, the art world has benefited from the existence of a cultural system of generosity towards the artistic and cultural imagination of the future, which today finds itself under threat of extinction. We must articulate our disagreement with these developments, and our resistance to them together, in order to prevent the following from happening: In the fields of art and culture, the budget will shrink by 200 million Euros; for visual art it means going from 53,3 to 31 million on an annual basis, taking immediate effect in 2013. Amongst other things, this will lead to: • A 50 % cut in the budget for stipends and working grants for artists; • A 50% cut in the budget of the Mondriaan Foundation, the body e.g. responsible for supporting international projects; • A dramatic reduction of the number of contemporary visual arts institutions receiving state support (which currently include Witte de With, De Appel, BAK, Marres, etc.) from 11 to 6; • A total withdrawal of all support for art magazines; • The end of government subsidies for functions now fulfilled by the Manifesta Foundation, SKOR \| Foundation for Art and Public Domain, and the NiMK – Netherlands Media Art Institute; • The end of all public financing of the post-academic education for artists offered in places such as the Ateliers, Rijksakademie voor beeldende kunsten, European Ceramic Work Centre, and the Jan van Eyck Academie. Given this dramatic situation of the annihilation of government support for broad sectors of the internationally-recognized Dutch contemporary art field, we hope that you—our international colleagues—will respond fiercely and immediately to this extermination of our future heritage by signing this letter and returning it to us. We will hand over all letters to State Secretary Halbe Zijlstra. Ann Demeester, Guus Beumer, Maria Hlavajova, Arno van Roosmalen, representing De Zaak Nu, various institutions and individuals in the contemporary visual arts all of whom are concerned about the future of the whole cultural field in the Netherlands. BOLOGNA SENZA VIE DI MEZZO

Ne è passata dell'acqua sotto Via Rivareno da quando ho messo su il blog dello spettro della bolognesità, un eroe dei nostri tempi, ancora qui, senza un senso come ogni blog che resiste a feisbuc e tuitter nel 2011.

Un blog prolifico, da una sua costola è nato UMARELLS (che si è fatto carta ristampata più volte) e dal resto del corpo è nato IL CODICE BOLOGNA.
Non poteva finire così, bisognava completare questa biologia e farla diventare una trilogia, ma come? Non è che potevo fare un libro sui sindaci rovinati dalla figa o sul CIVIS, a questo ci pensano i professionisti, mica io.
Un giorno mi chiama il boss di Pendragon e mi propone di scrivere sto libro.
L'idea è carina: 65 schede SI! e 65 schede NO! su Bologna (Hanno già pubblicato Roma, MIlano e Torino)
Ancora Bologna? Ancora bolognesità? Ebbasta.
Però l'idea era carina, però un libro tutto di Masotti poteva essere (ma anche no) una ripetizione degli altri due e allora ecco l'idea Masottiana "Senti Antonio, facciamo che io scrivo i SI! e un altro scrittore scrive i NO!"
Approvata.
Ma chi?
Notti insonni e deplorevoli avvolgono il bulbo performante di Masotti.
Nomi di individui improponibili politicalli scorrect aleggiano sia nella mente dell'autore di UMARELLS , sia in quella diAntonio Bagnoli, il boss di Pendragon, il grande burattinaio senza fili di Maso scrittore, un burattinaio uairless.
E alla fine lui, come non averci pensato prima: Vasco Rialzo.
Si, è lui che va bene, è lui che può scriver ei NO!
Ma chi è Vasco Rialzo?
Meglio così, qualcuno conosce Masotti e va bene, poi con sto libro conoscerà anche Vasco Rialzo.
Perfetto.
I due soggetti si mettono al lavoro senza mai vedersi come piace fare a Masotti, usano Gugol Docs, Gugol meil, Feisbuc, Scaip e tutti questi fantastici strumenti a zero emissioni che permettono alla gente di lavorare insieme senza mai vedersi.
Alla fine viene fuori questo libro qui.
In realtà Masotti e Rialzo avevano scritto molta più roba, ma gliel'hanno giustamente segata e sono venute fuori i 65 SI! masottiani e i 65 NO! rialziani, roba pesa al limite della denunzia.

Luoghi, Tendenze e Laifstail, Cibo, Sciopping, Arte & Cultura, Vita Notturna, Eventi, Protagonisti... in una pagina un SI! e nell'altra un NO! speculare, ficcante, cativo.

Un libro che farà parlare molto di sé, un libro in puro stile Masotti con i fendenti di Vasco Rialzo in attachment che vi assicuro fanno la differenza.
Eccome se la fanno.
Il libro sarà disponibile nelle librerie a partire da mercoledì 22 giugno 2011.
Presentazione in pompamagna la sera stessa alle ore 21.30 presso la libreria ecs cinema porno Ambasciatori, in Via degli Orefici 19 che per l'occasione l'assessore sbarbo Andrea Colombo pedonalizzerà.
Tanti ospiti, leggerà alcuni brani l'attrize Daniela Airoldi e tra il pubblico saranno presenti vari vip della metropoli di provincia. E' data al 99% la presenza del sindaco di Bologna Maurizio Cevenini, in forse Trucebaldazzi di cui se ne parla pure nel libro.
Sarà nei SI! o nei NO! ?

Il progetto parte da un sogno, il sogno di trovare un "locus ameno" dove potere riscoprire il piacere dell'incontro, dello scambio e della residenza.Dopo due anni di ricerche ecco trovato il casolare che si presta a questa scommessa. Il nome Novella Guerra è dedicato alla memoria di mia madre, ma è anche un ottimo programma e un concentrato di energia.

L'apertura avverrà con una collettiva dal titolo PER ARRIVARE QUI, IL SENTIERO DAVANTI ALLA SCUOLA che coinvolge una serie di artisti e amici, ognuno dei quali contribuirà ad allargare il cerchio delle relazioni invitando a sua volta un amico artista. Ne risulterà quindi una mostra di lavori che si arricchiscono vicendevolmente proprio per il fatto di dare forma tangibile a un invito amichevole che vuole essere l'inizio di nuovi dialoghi artistici e intellettuali. Il tutto si concluderà con una festa e, per chi vuole, con due giorni di incontro che faranno da contrappunto ad una programmazione di progetti artistici e curatoriali, scambi culturali, workshop. Nella futura programmazione dello spazio ci sarà la possibilità di sostare per più di un giorno; daremo vita ogni volta a piccole residenze dove l'evento finale sarà il risultato di una reale collaborazione e di un incontro ravvicinato.

Venice Biennale 2011

I didn't get to see it all (does anyone ever?) but this year's most interesting experience at the Venice Biennale was the Lithuanian Pavilion by Darius Mikšys. Behind a big white curtain were all the artists who won the participation to the biennale in the past, and you could ask the assistant to show you wichever work you preferred.

Magic.

I also very much enjoyed the Austrian, Danish and Dutch Pavilions.

Besides the very provincial debate about the Italian pavilion, where like 200 artists have been invited and about half of them have turned down the offer (and made a huge fuss about it in order to show off their ARTISTIC INTEGRITY), I think this year's Biennale will be quite a good one.

For what I saw from the national pavilions there will be plenty of interesting works to see.

I would recommend checking out the Danish, Mexican and French entries.

La RTA “Progetto Porta degli Angeli”, in collaborazione con il Comune di Ferrara - Circoscrizione 1, presenta un nuovo appuntamento, questa volta a cura dell’Associazione Culturale “YORUBA::diffusione arte contemporanea”.

Sabato 28 maggio 2011 a partire dalle ore 19.00 fino alle 23.00 inaugurerà la mostra personale di Stefano W. Pasquini, curata da M. Letizia Paiato eFederica Zabarri dell’Associazione Yoruba diffusione arte contemporanea di Ferrara.

Nella mostra dal titolo AIUTATEMI CHE SONO MESSO MALE Stefano W. Pasquini affronta, in maniera ironica e un po' sfacciata tipica del suo fare, il tema della crisi economica, sociale e culturale, che il nostro paese sta affrontando. Il mantra è una citazione dell'ormai noto Angelo Rizzi che con questa frase chiedeva l'elemosina nel centro di Bologna. Interpellato dall'artista, Rizzi si è detto entusiasta dell'uso della sua frase per fini artistici. Così, partendo da un punto di vista personale e quasi diaristico, l'artista inizia una riflessione lavorativa su quali siano i problemi reali del paese, interloquendo in vario modo con un pubblico che non è necessariamente il pubblico dell'arte.

Cosa può fare un artista in un paese fermo, in cui la cultura non ha alcuno sbocco professionale, in cui l'arte viene relegata al ruolo di mera decorazione casalinga e in cui la ricerca viene svilita con tagli alle risorse economiche che impongono la chiusura di ogni istituzione culturale?

Ammettere la sconfitta.

Nel momento in cui un’associazione virtuosa come Yoruba di Ferrara chiede ad un artista professionista di essere aiutata a realizzare una mostra senza fondi le possibilità sono due: o si declina con garbo, oppure si accetta la realtà che fare arte oggi significa fare volontariato culturale.

E questo viene accettato con leggerezza da Stefano W. Pasquini, che si preoccupa innanzitutto di come riuscire a gestire economicamente una mostra senza pesare troppo sul bilancio famigliare.

LA MOSTRA

Nello spazio ristrutturato della Porta degli Angeli (secondo la leggenda un tempo chiamata dai ferraresi La Casa del Boia) Pasquini vi dà il benvenuto misurando la velocità di entrata con un autovelox virtuale, che prende spunto dai comuni limitrofi che multano auto a 51 km orari per fare cassa, e vi chiede di raccontare le vostre esperienze e commenti su queste macchine infernali. All'interno, la mostra prosegue con una serie di altre opere che affrontano il tema della crisi, intesa sia a livello locale (i tagli a comuni e istruzione) che a livello globale, continuando una riflessione cominciata nella sua scorsa mostra personale (alla galleria Melepere di Verona) intitolata The End of the 90s and the Impressionists e proponendo una nuova scultura dedicata al movimento no global di Seattle del 1999. Mentre ci poniamo il dubbio che forse dieci anni fa i no global avessero ragione su molti aspetti del mercato globale, proseguiamo la visita nei meandri eclettici di questo spazio difficile per incontrare ulteriori prove di forza dell'artista nel mettere in discussione il sistema dell'arte: sculture costruite con materiali di rifiuto, schizzi e disegni che ammettono la mancanza di un punto d'arrivo, per finire al piano superiore della porta, dove oltre a una magnifica vista su Ferrara, incontriamo un'installazione costituita da diecimila strane 'banconote' stropicciate che da una parte vedono l'effigie di un cane, dall'altra lavoratori di una fabbrica. Pasquini si rifiuta di dare un'interpretazione di quest'opera, lasciando al fruitore la decisione del suo significato, ma certamente affiancare operai e cani in un momento di crisi non lascia troppo spazio all'immaginazione.

IL CD

Per autofinanziare virtualmente il progetto, Stefano W. Pasquini ha invitato una serie di musicisti a donare una canzone per una compilation musicale intitolata"Canzoni che costano un po' meno del solito", ventitré brani, di cui alcuni inediti, a formare un maquillage divertente ed eterogeneo a cui non manca un piglio di anarchia: dai New Hyronja di Danilo “Maso” Masotti (padre del famoso blog sugli Umarells) con un brano che fa il verso al mantra di Angelo Rizzi e sbeffeggia Bologna capitale europea della cultura, si passa ai tedeschi Weihnachtszwerge, poi Riccardo Lolli, Bagawire, Marzipan Marzipan e tanti altri. Da notare la presenza del gruppo vocale provenzale Lo Còr de la Plana, il cui hit Tan Deman è stato suonato dal vivo in un tour mondiale di oltre 40 paesi, e il bolognese Yu Guerra che propone una canzone dal suo ultimo album “Messaggio Inutile”. I Rifondazione Sklero intonano il Canto di dolore di un tombino, mentre l'esordienteAgonia intona un rap contro la mercificazione dell'uomo. Altri nomi illustri sono Pierdiego and his deficient crew, Alberto Despini, gli americani Troostite ed il tedesco Jörg Dreisörner-Wichmann, scomparso lo scorso anno, a cui il CD e' dedicato. Come finale, non poteva mancare l'intervento gioviale del ferrarese Guido Foddis, che con “Pagherò” trasforma tutti i nostri guai in un sorriso dal ritornello stile spaghetti e mandolino. Una compilation in edizione limitata che non può mancare in nessuna collezione musicale o artistica.

OBSOLETE SHIT

Non contento di aver smosso cantautori, rappers e case discografiche, Pasquini pubblica, ad ogni sua mostra, un magazine dalle uscite casuali con numeri casuali, intitolato Obsolete Shit. Il terzo numero (dopo il 7, il 22, il 24 e il 17 usciti dal 2008 a questa parte) vede la collaborazione di quarantadue esponenti di un gruppo segreto di Facebook che giornalmente si confronta su temi di attualità e leggerezze quotidiane, che per l'occasione si sono improvvisati autori e giornalisti e hanno creato un numero eclettico disadattato, che mescola arte e realtà in un groviglio imperscrutabile di vita, a sottolineare che la cultura e la letteratura sono più che mai vitali anche tra la gente che di solito non si espone. Dallo stesso fantomatico gruppo di Facebook è tratta la sceneggiatura della performance “UA1103 – Classe Sociale” che vedrà un gruppo di attori interagire dialetticamente in una sorta di chat dell'assurdo guidata dalla magistrale regia di Roberta Pazi.
