REGIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Kent, WA + Kent Maintenance/Operations Facility – Perimeter Artwork
The City of Kent announces a call for exterior sculpture of any medium, including landscape integrated works. Experienced public artists and teams residing in Washington are asked to create a transition between a suburban neighborhood and a new Maintenance Operations Facility. The artwork will be located along the facility’s 1,900 foot perimeter berm of varying width, 50-100 feet. The intended audience for this public artwork will be neighborhood residents and visitors to Clark Lake Park. Budget is $200,000 all inclusive.

Seattle, WA + CityArtist Projects
The Mayor’s Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs announces the CityArtist Projects call to artists. Funding up to $10,000 is available for Seattle artists in the visual, film, media and literary arts, including screen and scriptwriting. For artists interested in applying, an information session will be available from 5:30 to 7: 30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 4 at the Northwest Film Forum, 1515 12th Ave.

City of Seattle, WA + Seattle Center Skatepark
A design-team artist (or artist team) will be selected to work with design consultants and the skateboarding community to identify art opportunities and to develop art enhancements for the new Seattle Center Skatepark. It is currently envisioned that designs developed by the artist(s) will be fabricated and installed under the construction project. The fabrication budget for art enhancements will be developed in conjunction with Seattle Center and the design team. Open to established professional artists living in Washington, Oregon and British Columbia, Canada. Budget for design team participation is $22,850.

Seattle, WA + University of Washington Light Rail Station
This Sound Transit underground light rail stop will connect the NE Seattle campus with the downtown core and SeaTac International Airport. Transit riders reach the train platform 110 feet below the surface using a series of criss-crossing escalators and staircases as well as fast elevators. A prime art zone is an architectural feature wall reaching from ground level to the train boarding area, which will be designed as a porous, unifying experience for the passengers using the station. The budget is $550,000 for design, fabrication, installation, taxes and all associated costs. Design is scheduled for April 2008 through March 2009, with the station opening in 2016 due to tunneling through Capitol Hill and under Portage Bay.

Redmond, OR + City Center Gateway
The City of Redmond's Commission for Art in Public Places invites artists and artist teams to submit qualifications to design and produce a public art piece for a new city center gateway created by the intersection of Highland and Glacier Avenues and the Highway 97 Reroute.
This project is meant to serve as a gateway monument for the City of Redmond at one of its most prominent and busiest signalized intersections and should celebrate the landscape and natural habitat of the region. The project budget is up to $40,000 for the design, fabrication and installation of the art piece(s). The site is approximately 10,000 square feet in area. Seattle, WA + Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs Public Art Program:
Arts Enhancement Project Manager
The Public Art Program of Seattle's Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs and Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) seek a half-time Arts Enhancement Project Manager to work at SDOT's offices. This position will assist arts staff in establishing priorities for SDOT public art allocations, advise SDOT project managers on aesthetic issues, provide design input on capital and other projects, and assist in implementing recommendations in the SDOT Art Plan http://www.seattle.gov/arts/publicart/art_plans.asp among other duties. Qualified applicants will have a background in art and/or design with demonstrated experience collaborating with and/or working within a large organization.

Issaquah, WA + Artwork for Purchase
The City of Issaquah Arts Commission plans to purchase five to eight works of art during 2008. Artists are encouraged to submit an application for consideration for the following: Outdoor sculptures large enough to be seen from a distance, and representing high artistic value and craftsmanship; Indoor art such as paintings, smaller sculptures, cloth art, video installations, and so forth, for placement in highly visible indoor locations; Landscape art, including such things as meditative spaces; artistic uses of trees, brush, flowers or berms; artistic walkways; or sculpture gardens combining landscape art and sculpture.

Burien, WA + Burien City Festival Mural
Burien Art Gallery is looking for an artist to create a Mural for the city festival in the month of June. The mural is approximately 20'x 8' feet. Bellingham, WA + Station Plaza Sculpture
Whatcom Transportation Authority, in partnership with the City of Bellingham Arts Commission, seeks to commission a piece of wind driven kinetic art work for its central transit hub, Bellingham Station. The art work will serve as the focal point for an outdoor plaza at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Magnolia Street in Downtown Bellingham.
An artist commission of $65,000 will be awarded to develop, create, and install the artwork. WTA will provide lighting, and will work with the Bellingham Arts Commission and City of Bellingham for necessary approval and permits.

Wilsonville, OR + Regional Sculpture Exhibition
The Wilsonville Citizens for Public Art (WCPA) is pleased to invite local and regional sculptors to submit existing work for consideration in the display of public art for the City of Wilsonville, Oregon. Sculpture will be on loan for the period of July 1, 2008 through May, 2009. The Wilsonville Citizens for Public Art (WCPA) was established in 2002, with the goal of placing quality sculpture pieces in public places to give citizens and visitors an opportunity to interact with art as an integral part of the design of this diverse community. It is the intent of the WCPA to select nine sculpture pieces to be placed in selected highly visible sites throughout the city for an entire ‘art year’. The honorarium for each sculpture is $500.00.

Salt Lake City, Utah + Northwest Recreation and Senior Center
Salt Lake County is soliciting proposals from qualified artists, living in the United States, to participate in an open competition for works of art for the new Northwest Recreation & Senior Center located at 1300 West 300 North in Salt Lake City, Utah. Peru, NE + Peru State College HPER Building
Peru State College, in accordance with the State of Nebraska One Percent for Art legislation, seeks artwork for the HPER building and additional sites, both interior and exterior, surrounding campus. The HPER building is presently undergoing remodeling on the campus of Peru State College, in Peru, Nebraska. Budget for this project is $50,000 all inclusive. The planned artwork consists of a series of several bobcat sculptures, each of varying media and design, which will be creatively placed throughout the campus. Each bobcat sculpture will be the unique and original creation of an artist.

Orland Park, IL + Public Art Program Call for Sculptures
The program’s goal is to enhance parks and public areas in Orland Park with art. The Art in the Park program is anchored by a sculpture created by nationally renowned artist Virginio Ferrari. Additionally, a bronze sculpture of Orland Park’s first Mayor, Senator John Humphrey, is on display at the 143rd Street Metra Station. Three sites are now available to artists wishing to publicly display their sculpture. The available sites are in areas that will compliment the existing sculptures. They are located along a well-traveled road and bike path located in the heart of Orland Park, and offer high visibility resulting from nearby pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic. Artists will receive a $2,500 honorarium for a 3 year lease to put their sculpture on display. A wide variety of media will be considered, however, all sculptures must be durable and suitable for outdoor placement.

Indianapolis, IN + On Procession Art Parade
On Procession is an exhibition that investigates parades as themes and staged events in contemporary artworks. The exhibition will premiere at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) in May 2008. Artworks in the exhibition draw upon ideas of ritual, propaganda and civic celebration, and survey issues of history, identity, and public visibility. On view will be videos, sculpture, installation artworks, costumes, banners, and parade artifacts and ephemera by such artists as Jeremy Deller, Fritz Haeg, Allison Smith, and art collective Friends With You. In conjunction with the exhibition, the IMA is organizing a downtown art parade in the heart of Indianapolis, and will debut new works by artists including Smith, Haeg, and Friends With You as part of the parade.
The parade occurs April 26, 2008 at noon in Indianapolis.

Northglenn, CO + Northglenn Arts and Humanities Foundation Sculpture Competition
The Northglenn Arts and Humanities Foundation (NAHF) is conducting an open entry competition to select six sculptures valued at no more than $25,000 each to be part of Northglenn’s “Art on Parade” on-loan sculpture program. The selected pieces will be installed for a period of one year at E.B. Rains Jr. Memorial Park surrounding Webster Lake in Northglenn, Colorado.
Each of the six finalists will receive a $500 honorarium, in addition a $1,000 “People’s Choice Award” will be given. The placement of selected pieces will begin in late May and will be on display until May 2009. Somerset County, ME + Norridgewock Pre K – 6 School
The Maine Arts Commission is calling all professional artists to submit conceptual proposals to design, execute, and install artwork at the Norridgewock Pre K - 6 School (MSAD 54), Percent for Art site. The estimated budget is $45,000. The Norridgewock Pre - 6 School is a new school construction that will bring together the three schools of Mercer, Smithfield, and Norridgewock under one roof. The school will host approximately 400 students, in the two story facility. The school will be constructed near wetlands, in rural Somerset County Maine.
The committee is requesting conceptual proposals for the exterior and interior of the building. They are looking for installation proposals that reflect the culture and character of the communities. All professional artists may apply for consideration for this project. Preference will be given to Maine artists.

Madison, WI + University of Wisconsin: Biochemistry II Addition Building
The Wisconsin Art Board's Percent for Art program seeks artists to compete for a $233,000 commission to create artwork for the University of Wisconsin's new Biochemistry II Addition building. Qualified candidates must have a proven track record of successfully completing public art commissions with budgets over $100,000.

Tempe, AZ + Design Team Member: Historical Museum Renovation
The city of Tempe Cultural Services Division is announcing a Design Team Opportunity for the renovation of the Historical Museum. Design Team fee for this project will not exceed $20,000. In spite of one million visitors passing into the library and millions of cars passing by on Southern Avenue and Rural Road, this museum disappears amongst the trees and bricks. It resembles a non-descript medical or dental complex. This renovation will add bold, colorful and dramatic architectural elements to herald the exhibit hall revitalization. Longmont, CO + Longmont Vance Brand Municipal Airport
Longmont's Art in Public Places (AIPP) Commission is accepting applications from artists or teams of artists who wish to be considered for a project at the Longmont Vance Brand Municipal Airport, located on Airport Road on the western edge of Longmont, Colorado. AIPP is a program of the City of Longmont and is administered under the Longmont Museum & Cultural Center. Budget is $40,000 all inclusive.
The AIPP Commission is seeking artwork for this site that will take into account the many aspects
of Longmont, including the history of the area, the history of the airport and local aviation, the high visibility of the site, and the environment both in its current state as well as the original land. New Haven, CT + Central Business District
The City of New Haven requests submissions of qualifications and basic conceptual idea(s) from professional artists for the design of a temporary outdoor artwork for its central business district. The goal is to create a unique, New Haven–specific visual and/or performance work that is publicly inclusive, interactive, and sensory.
The selected artist will work with the City of New Haven/Office of Cultural Affairs and its Public Art Committee in producing a temporary art installation/performance in the summer of 2009. The artist should identify a prominent location in one or more commercial/civic corridors of downtown New Haven. Chapel Hill, NC + Public Art 360: A Symposium from Seven Perspectives
Please join us in Chapel Hill North Carolina from Friday evening 11 April 2008 through Saturday evening 12 April 2008 for Public Art 360: A Symposium from Seven Perspectives. Public Art 360 will address the functional and aesthetic interaction among public art, professional design disciplines, private development, and government.
Invited speakers will explore the inherent complexities in public art from the perspectives of artist, architect, landscape designer, government, private developer, community, and critic. Sessions will frame critical issues associated with how public art projects are initiated, approved, funded, and implemented; how to reinforce shared objectives through public review; and, implications for public policy. Throughout the Symposium we will encourage interaction and dialogue among participants and speakers: bring questions and problems.

Omaha, NE + University of Nebraska: College of Public Affairs and Community Service, Departmental Storefronts Project
The University of Nebraska at Omaha College of Public Affairs and Community Service (CPACS) Art Selection Committee and Nebraska Arts Council, in accordance with State of Nebraska One Percent for Art Legislation, announce a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the Departmental Storefronts Project. The new building for CPACS is under construction on the University of Omaha Campus in Omaha, Nebraska, and contains within the interior eleven departmental areas which require artistic treatment. Budget is $70,000 - $90,000 all inclusive.
Artwork sought for this project will be applied to, adjacent to, or otherwise a part of, ten individual glass-paneled storefronts which compose the entrances to the various college department offices. The eleventh storefront consists of an opaque door and drywalled area and houses the Radio/TV offices. The primary theme sought to unify these departments is one of "transparency". It is also desirable that each departmental storefront contains some imagery or content that is referential to the department.

Groton, NY + Go Green Public Installation
The Main Street Gallery is seeking submissions for a large scale installation on the environment. The exhibition will be called "GO GREEN" to take place on June 12 - July 20, 2008. Artists and general public worldwide can participate by sending in handwritten or typed words in any language about the environment. The paper can be either rolled, folded, scrap, colored or uneven, preferably recycled and no larger than 8.5" x 11" (22cm x 28cm).
Drawings or photographs can be part of the work. No painting will be accepted. Please put your name and where you are from in the lower right hand corner of your submission. The handling fee is $10. Outside the US, money orders in US currency will only be accepted. The work will not be returned, since it will be part of a larger installation.
The complete space of the gallery will become an installation where one message is heard "GO GREEN". The aim of this show is to let the public voice their concerns about the environment. If there is enough response, this installation will become a touring exhibition.

Taylorsville, UT + Unified State Lab Projects
Utah Department of Health, Unified State Lab Project has a budget of $205,000 all inclusive. The concept of the Unified State Lab is derived from the name itself. Unification is the creation of one from multiple, whether it is one science with another, or the built environment with nature and/or art. It’s all about creating a symbiotic relationship between multiple elements. The selection committee desires work(s) of art that engage with nature and the surrounding environment, which follows the concepts for the lab project.
There are a number of sites within the project identified by the committee as acceptable for placement of public art. The committee is also very open to other sites as suggested by artists. The struggle is with the nature of the facility and the requirements of security measures thereby limiting areas of the project designated as public.

Palm Desert, CA + 2009/2010 El Paseo Invitational Exhibition
The City of Palm Desert is now accepting applications for the 2009/2010 El Paseo Invitational Exhibition. The exhibition is showcased on the medians of El Paseo and is seen by thousands of visitors each year as well as advertised nationally, regionally, and locally. The exhibition is juried by a curator and runs for approximately two years. An honorarium of $2,500 is awarded for each selected artwork.
All sculptures must be installed on one of the existing pads along the El Paseo median (see full guidelines for pad sizes). All sculptures must be designed with tabs or other devices that can be utilized to secure the artwork to the concrete pads. Artworks can be sold, but not removed for six months once installation is completed. If a sculpture from the exhibition is sold, the artist or representative must resubmit for approval of a replacement artwork. Installation will be paid for by the City of Palm Desert and scheduled starting October 20, 2008.

The Art In Ecology program offers ongoing opportunities for northwest artists to exhibit their work in two galleries and a variety of large, light-filled, and spacious public setting fitted with professional quality hardware and lighting systems. The work will be seen by over 1300 employees and countless visitors. Announcements for the show are published regionally. Recognizing that so much of our national debate is conducted in imagery -- and that tremendous effort is expended to spin things toward the status quo -- the call is going out to artists to use our expressive powers and social imagination to focus public attention on whatever must be put right and whatever suggests how that may be accomplished. SPARC, the Social and Public Art Resource Center in Venice, California, has inaugurated the National Call to Artists, a Web repository for images, songs, scripts, and ideas. A key aim is to challenge and assist activists to make effective use of creative imagery, action, and imagination in mobilizing awareness and participation in social action. Cambridge Arts Council's Public Art Slide Registry is the main resource for the selection of artists for the Percent-for-Art program administered by the City of Cambridge. The registry includes slides by over 800 local and national artists, representing a broad range of media, styles, and approaches to public art. All professional artists are eligible. At the gateway to Jackson Hole WY, a dormant gasoline station sign has been converted into a public art venue, displaying 2-D and sculptural works. The project is seeking artwork for an ongoing exhibition.
